Should environmental education become a new school subject?

What do you think about the environment? Are you interested in it? If so then read this blog post, because I will show some advantages of environmental education as a school subject. First of all there are a lot of environmental problems around the world. One huge problem is the plastic in the ocean. Many animals die, because they eat the plastic. As a solution people should use less plastic and more paper or glass. Another important problem is air pollution. People should go by bike or the take the bus. Secondly I want to talk about solutions school can do. They should use more glass instead of plastic. Also the schools can recycle the plastic, because it rots very slowly. For example you can use paper to pack food in the school buffet. Should environmental education become integrated in other lessons? Environmental education should be integrated in biology, because in this subject you talk about the nature. It is a really important topic, but it shouldn’t become a new subject b...

Corona what else?

Are you also a student right now who is struggling with online schooling? I am! If you also feel  overwhelmed and exhausted regarding Corona, then you are in the right place.  Since February 2020 everything has changed. It all started mid of March with a lock-down. From one day to the other schools were closed and the so called “distance learning” started. Which sounded exciting at first glance turned out to be a disaster. Neither the ministry of education, nor the teachers nor the pupils were prepared for such a form of teaching. We all were confronted with a lack of nearly everything: end devices, standardized teaching platforms, regular online lessons and last but not least we missed our friends and even our teachers ☺ . School year ended after having four weeks of teaching in shifts and started after two months of open school again with closed schools and distance learning – until yesterday Even if Austrian students haven’t learned as much about the different subjec...

The status of our environment is getting worse and worse!

Don’t you think our environment is in big trouble? Because I do! There is this huge hole in the ozone layer which has to close again for example. But this only works if we finally decide to do something for it. Planting trees would be optimal. But this hole isn’t our only problem. There are many other problems like the pollution of oceans and seas. Many fishes are dying because of that. But the list of bad things doesn’t stop here. There are many other disasters we have to do something about as well. To fix those things we need every help we can get. So why don’t you or your school contribute something good for the environment? For example, by going to demonstrations. Starting an environmental-protection school project would also be a great idea. There are many other options to do something good for nature as long as something changes. Even if you only start separating waste. But to start helping the environment people have to know what they can do about it. Therefore, it would b...

Covid – A student’s dream or educational disaster?

As we surely all have understood by now the past year has been drastically different due to the global pandemic, for adults as well as for students. In this blog post I will show you the viewpoint of an affected student from Austria. First of all, schools only partially closed down. For the most time online classes were held, then when things got better the government decided to switch to a system with half of the students physically going to school every other day. Unfortunately, this led to more covid-cases, resulting in a back and forth between online classes and “real” classes. One of the major differences was in the amount of work that we got assigned. Not only were the teachers much more generous with homework but as a student I had a lot more time to manage, and efficiently do, all the tasks. This might seem like a big advantage for everyone, but the actual online meetings were much more stressful than I could’ve ever imagined. Over time, however, things changed. Teachers ...

Did COVID-19 change the school education?

This year has been an interesting and unpredictable one. Don't you agree with me? Some things improved, and people gained new knowledge. Isn't this fantastic? But how did school education change? Was this a school year in which children learned something or was it something of a holiday for them? This school year, 2020/21, children and teens were unable to attend school for a long period of time, because of the Coronavirus. Late in October, schools and restaurants closed and reopened in the middle of May. As a result, people lost their jobs and went through a tough period for seven months. There were several times when students could go to school, but only for two weeks, and the classes were divided into two groups, which was awesome because students, who were shyer than others, got more confident and teachers noticed easier if somebody had any difficulty with school, for example. However, many people and students learned how to use their laptop properly and how to be more re...

An abnormal school year

I strongly assume that every student can tell that COVID has affected their school year in some way. However, it is difficult to say at this point if this disruption of our schooling has interfered with our education. I’ve actually heard some students say that they’ve hardly learned anything during the time at home. What was it like for you? Let’s start with the difference from normal school years. The first two months were quite normal, apart from new hygienic standards. Then, however, students in upper secondary school switched to distance learning from November until February and only entered the school for exams. Some classes were taught as online meetings, others were work schedules with individual assignments. From February to May, every class got split into two groups that attend school for half a week. Yet it can be said that students were forced to develop skills which they wouldn’t have learned in a normal year. Computer competencies, working with online programs such as...

Youtube Celebrities are real celebrities

Do you also love to watch Youtube? Then I really want to share my opinion about the platform an the celebrities that are on it. I really liketo watch Youtube, but i prefer british content creators because the content is way better than the German channels. I really like Videos about football. When I was a little bit younger my favourite channel was called „Sidemen“. They were a group of some men and they often did funny football challenges and always made me laugh. But they are not only comedy and sport videos. There are also channels where you can learn something for school and I think thats a good way to learn. However, there are also people who upload complete nonsense to this platform. I think they are real celebrities because they have a lot fans, many people know them and they got a great range, but ist questionable whether some deserve it because they post wrong and useless things that are not good for the society. As long as you use your reach fort he good, I think that y...
