Did COVID-19 change the school education?

This year has been an interesting and unpredictable one. Don't you agree with me? Some things improved, and people gained new knowledge. Isn't this fantastic? But how did school education change? Was this a school year in which children learned something or was it something of a holiday for them?

This school year, 2020/21, children and teens were unable to attend school for a long period of time, because of the Coronavirus. Late in October, schools and restaurants closed and reopened in the middle of May. As a result, people lost their jobs and went through a tough period for seven months. There were several times when students could go to school, but only for two weeks, and the classes were divided into two groups, which was awesome because students, who were shyer than others, got more confident and teachers noticed easier if somebody had any difficulty with school, for example.

However, many people and students learned how to use their laptop properly and how to be more responsible and structured. As a result, people today have more technological knowledge than they did before, which is great for them and important for the future.

So, this year was not so awful after all. I believe that this year was not a loss for students because there were less tests than usual and teachers were nicer with grades, which is a benefit for those students who struggle in school.

Why don’t you share your personal thoughts on this topic? In conclusion, I suggest you to enjoy the rest of this year and to make the most out of it!

  1. Dear Elizabeth S.,
I really appreciated reading your BLOG POST today and I am overwhelmed by your creative ideas. In fact, you put much effort in your text! I also think, that there are big benefits out of this covid year, e.g. the knowledge of the technology. Furthermore I like the rhetorical questions in your blog. Very well done, I hope to read more of these in the future,
    All the best,

Covid – A student’s dream or educational disaster?

As we surely all have understood by now the past year has been drastically different due to the global pandemic, for adults as well as for students. In this blog post I will show you the viewpoint of an affected student from Austria. First of all, schools only partially closed down. For the most time online classes were held, then when things got better the government decided to switch to a system with half of the students physically going to school every other day. Unfortunately, this led to more covid-cases, resulting in a back and forth between online classes and “real” classes. One of the major differences was in the amount of work that we got assigned. Not only were the teachers much more generous with homework but as a student I had a lot more time to manage, and efficiently do, all the tasks. This might seem like a big advantage for everyone, but the actual online meetings were much more stressful than I could’ve ever imagined. Over time, however, things changed. Teachers ...

The status of our environment is getting worse and worse!

Don’t you think our environment is in big trouble? Because I do! There is this huge hole in the ozone layer which has to close again for example. But this only works if we finally decide to do something for it. Planting trees would be optimal. But this hole isn’t our only problem. There are many other problems like the pollution of oceans and seas. Many fishes are dying because of that. But the list of bad things doesn’t stop here. There are many other disasters we have to do something about as well. To fix those things we need every help we can get. So why don’t you or your school contribute something good for the environment? For example, by going to demonstrations. Starting an environmental-protection school project would also be a great idea. There are many other options to do something good for nature as long as something changes. Even if you only start separating waste. But to start helping the environment people have to know what they can do about it. Therefore, it would b...

No education because of Covid19?

The last year was very difficult for many students in Austria. Why? Covid19 didn’t just change the way we shop, but also the way we go to school. In this year, the school system changed significantly. To illustrate this point, distance learning was established and the students only went to school for short periods of time. The whole class was in school for a very short time and from then on, distance learning and shift operation shaped the school year. But this time didn’t cost us a year of education, as many people might claim. Because of these new systems, students have learned many new skills. They worked with computers on a regular basis, organised themselves and even learned new topics on their own. This was a time where students developed a lot of new abilities which they wouldn’t have gained in a normal year. In my opinion, this year didn’t cost us a year of education. In fact, I believe this unique time was a very educational one for the students. For instance, the comput...
