Environment – a school subject?

Do you know about deforestation? Or the melting polar caps? Or maybe even the Great Pacific garbage patch? All of these are topics regarding the environment. Although they are so important, not much about them is taught at schools. And that’s what I want to talk about in this Blog post.

I got most of the information I have about these topics from the Internet or documentaries. Current environmental problems, regarding the ocean, are not talked about in school that much, although they are just as important as some of the other problems we learn about. That’s a topic, pupils should definitely learn more about. But that’s just one of many.

Do you know any ways to help with the climate crisis and other environmental issues? If you ask me, that’s something that schools should teach young people more about. That would help a lot, because it spreads awareness about the environment and suggests ways for the students to help with its condition. Another way schools could help, involves school buffets. School buffets getting rid of at least most of their plastic, and offering a wider variety of vegetarian and vegan food, would help with at least some of the environmental problems.

Environmental education is important. The question is: How to teach it to the pupils? I think, that the basics should be integrated in other lessons, with the option of an additional, voluntary subject, which can be chosen by the students. In that voluntary subject, environmental issues – as well as ways to help with problems of this kind – could be discussed in more detail.

What do you think of the environmental education at your school? Can you think of any other ways, school could help the environment? Let me know about your thoughts in the comments and start helping the environment today!

Covid – A student’s dream or educational disaster?

As we surely all have understood by now the past year has been drastically different due to the global pandemic, for adults as well as for students. In this blog post I will show you the viewpoint of an affected student from Austria. First of all, schools only partially closed down. For the most time online classes were held, then when things got better the government decided to switch to a system with half of the students physically going to school every other day. Unfortunately, this led to more covid-cases, resulting in a back and forth between online classes and “real” classes. One of the major differences was in the amount of work that we got assigned. Not only were the teachers much more generous with homework but as a student I had a lot more time to manage, and efficiently do, all the tasks. This might seem like a big advantage for everyone, but the actual online meetings were much more stressful than I could’ve ever imagined. Over time, however, things changed. Teachers ...

The status of our environment is getting worse and worse!

Don’t you think our environment is in big trouble? Because I do! There is this huge hole in the ozone layer which has to close again for example. But this only works if we finally decide to do something for it. Planting trees would be optimal. But this hole isn’t our only problem. There are many other problems like the pollution of oceans and seas. Many fishes are dying because of that. But the list of bad things doesn’t stop here. There are many other disasters we have to do something about as well. To fix those things we need every help we can get. So why don’t you or your school contribute something good for the environment? For example, by going to demonstrations. Starting an environmental-protection school project would also be a great idea. There are many other options to do something good for nature as long as something changes. Even if you only start separating waste. But to start helping the environment people have to know what they can do about it. Therefore, it would b...

No education because of Covid19?

The last year was very difficult for many students in Austria. Why? Covid19 didn’t just change the way we shop, but also the way we go to school. In this year, the school system changed significantly. To illustrate this point, distance learning was established and the students only went to school for short periods of time. The whole class was in school for a very short time and from then on, distance learning and shift operation shaped the school year. But this time didn’t cost us a year of education, as many people might claim. Because of these new systems, students have learned many new skills. They worked with computers on a regular basis, organised themselves and even learned new topics on their own. This was a time where students developed a lot of new abilities which they wouldn’t have gained in a normal year. In my opinion, this year didn’t cost us a year of education. In fact, I believe this unique time was a very educational one for the students. For instance, the comput...
